The Princess

The Princess was walking down the street sadly. Her hair was gray like all pure Moreians but her eyes were the unnatural deep sea violet blue of a Tahnian. Like all royalty and nobles in Morisa her feet were bare but they were soft and delicate. The crowds around her berated her, throwing smelly mushy fruits and vegetables at her which splattered her exquisite light blue dress as it hit the cobblestone street. She was being driven out of the city for being a heretic. She was barely 16 years old, too young to be on her own, but her father’s laws came before his daughter and the law said that an atheist must wander the world without stopping for more than a day. She was sent off with nothing more than the clothes on her back. As she walked past the bakery with her head down a shrewd little girl pushed her and she fell scraping her arms on the rough stones. The little girl laughed and the crowd thundered in wicked laughter. Then, a shadow fell over the little princess.

She thought as tears spilled down her smooth cheeks, do they torture me and drag me through the streets in mockery? And even now, one comes to strike me. She said in a tiny voice that rang like a clear bell, “if you want to strike me, why do you wait? Do you wish to mock me as well?”

The shadow crouched over her and a gauntleted hand lifted her face gently, her eyes met a silver polished metal helmet of one of her fathers knights.

A deep gentle voice came from the helmet, “I do not wish to hurt you, your highness. I only wish to protect you.”

He took her bloody scraped arms and lifted her up, he gave her a handkerchief and she wiped the tears away. He took part of his bright red cape and casted it behind her protecting her back and lifted his shield to protect her head from the smelly projectiles. His arm behind her back gently pushed her forward towards the open city gates. When they had reached the gates the shouts and food throwing had ceased entirely, the only thing that was heard was the knights clicking armor as he walked next to the princess.

As they stepped outside the gates he lowered the cape and shield, she put her hand on his arm and said softly, “Good Knight, I do not wish for you to follow me into exile. Please, protect me father.”

“My lady, I will follow you wherever you go. I swear to always be by your side and never leave you. I swore that to you long ago… Do you not remember me?”

“I do confess, I do not recall that time.” said the princess sadly.

He took off his helmet revealing a head of tasoled gray hair and dark brown eyes, it was a young noble who had entered into her fathers service when she was young. They had played together under the watchful eye of her late mother.

“Surely you remember your friend's face, little princess?”

She touched his face as if he might fade under her fingers, “I do remember you good knight.” She smiled a smile that made the sun look dim. “Stay with me good knight friend… please.”

“I always look over my Princess.” He took her small delicate face in between his big strong hands and kissed her ruby lips.

Then they took each other's hand and walked off into the horizon towards whatever dangers lied ahead.
